MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - It’s mud season in Vermont and officials are urging hikers to abide by trail closures.

The Green Mountain Club, the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation and the Green Mountain National Forest say the wet soils on and around hiking trails are susceptible to erosion this time of year. They say hikers walking on wet soils or the side of trails cause damage to surrounding vegetation and inhibit natural drainage.

For those reasons some trails may be closed.

While it may seem warm out, officials say mountains have cold, wet, snowy, and icy conditions that may persist deep into spring.

Jessica Savage, of the Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation says, “Saving your mountain hikes until the trails are dry will ensure a better, longer hiking season for all.”
