BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Supreme Court has heard arguments over whether police can charge a fee to someone that asks to view body camera footage.
Vermont Public Radio reports that the city of Burlington argued in court Wednesday that government agencies are allowed by law to charge money to pay for the labor of copying records.
Reed Doyle, of Burlington, says he saw police use excessive force against children in 2017. Doyle asked to see the body camera footage and was told by police that portions needed to be redacted and that it would cost him at least $220.50.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Vermont, who is representing Doyle, says the law differentiates between inspecting a public record and asking for a copy.
