ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) - St. Joseph estimates that Missouri River flooding has cost the city around $1 million.
The St. Joseph News-Press reports that an estimated $600,000 worth of the damage occurred at Heritage Park, where outfield fences and a concession building were affected. The city also expects damage to underground electric utilities that supply power to field lights.
At a public works facility, floodwaters inundated a basement, destroying a boiler. Floodwaters also washed away road salt supplies and ruined gasoline.
Other expenses included sandbagging, pumping operations, closing roadways and overtime for city workers and emergency crews, who coordinated traffic and evacuated a portion of the city.
Last month, the Missouri River breached numerous levees, mostly upstream of St. Joseph. Hundreds of homes were inundated. Missouri is planning to ask for federal aid.
