HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A drama student at a Connecticut university charged with stabbing two other students while rehearsing a movie scene is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.

The Hartford Courant reports that 21-year-old University of Hartford student Jake Wascher made his first pre-trial appearance Monday where his lawyer told the judge about the evaluation.

Wascher, of San Diego, is being held at a facility where inmates with mental health issues are often held and receive treatment.

Wascher faces two counts of attempted murder and two counts of first-degree assault in connection with the March 31 stabbings on campus. Both victims are recovering.

Defense attorney Richard Brown told the judge he had not yet had time to talk extensively with Wascher, but refused comment outside court.

Wascher’s next scheduled court appearance is May 2.
