BRISTOL, R.I. (AP) - Hundreds gathered for an official ceremony renaming a U.S. Post Office in Rhode Island after an Army Green Beret who was killed in Afghanistan.
Gov. Gina Raimondo and the entire congressional delegation attended the ceremony held Sunday to name the post office in Bristol for 1st Sgt. P. Andrew McKenna.
Raimondo said Sunday “we owe him a debt of gratitude forever.”
The 35-year-old Bristol native died during an attack in Kabul in 2015. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart for his service.
McKenna’s mother says she is proud of her son, and called what everyone has done for him “incredible.”
A plaque with his name on it will be hung on the inside of the post office.
