COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina sheriff is apologizing for the behavior of deputies who dispersed a crowd of tailgaters outside the South Carolina-Tennessee football game over the weekend.
The State reports Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott declined to give details at a news conference Monday of the deputies’ conduct. But he said: “It did not look good.”
Lott said deputies were dispatched Saturday to disperse a large crowd at a popular tailgating spot at the S.C. State Fairgrounds. They included mounted officer on horseback brandishing a riot stick, which Lott said appeared “very intimidating.”
No one was arrested or injured. But the sheriff said internal affairs investigators were reviewing the incident.
Lott said: “I’m sorry that it happened. We are addressing it.”
