GLEN COVE, N.Y. (AP) - The budget of a Long Island city was rejected by its city council - only to be enacted anyway due to a quirk in city law.
Glen Cove City Council voted 5-1 on party lines Tuesday, with five Republicans voting no on Democratic Mayor Timothy Tenke’s budget. Newsday reports the budget was enacted anyways because the city charter states that if the council fails to approve the budget by the fourth Tuesday in October, it is considered adopted.
Democratic Councilwoman Marsha Silverman says her colleagues “showboated” by voting against the budget, knowing it would be enacted regardless.
Republican Councilman Kevin Maccarone said he voted no because the budget includes a $600,000 surplus alongside a tax levy increase.
Tenke says the city needs a surplus fund for unanticipated future expenses.
