PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - An independent candidate for Congress has filed a complaint with the state of Maine that accuses an opponent of falsely portraying himself as a psychologist.

Marty Grohman filed the complaint with the Maine attorney general’s office and other agencies against Republican Mark Holbrook. The two are seeking to unseat Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree in the 1st Congressional District.

Holbrook tells the Portland Press Herald that he has a doctorate in clinical psychology but has never portrayed himself as a practicing clinical psychologist. He said he works as a counselor.

A spokesman for Grohman says Holbrook’s “lack of candor about his license status is deeply disturbing.” Holbrook calls the attack on his credentials “pretty loathsome.”
