VERNON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - A bus company has cancelled an ambitious pilot program connecting New York City to a New Jersey community nearly 50 miles away.

Coach USA began on Sept. 17 with a program running 56-seat bus on a direct trip between Vernon Township and midtown Manhattan, about 48 miles (77 kilometers) apart, once per day in each direction on weekdays. NJ.com reports average ridership was less than 10 commuters a day.

The pilot program ended on Friday.

Vernon Mayor Harry Shortway says there were no riders at all on certain days. According to U.S. Census data, Vernon residents have some of the longest commutes in the state - averaging about 42 minutes each way.

Coach USA official Sean Hughes says the demand wasn’t there for the service.
