SALTILLO, Miss. (AP) - Water customers in a northeast Mississippi city could pay 85 percent more to drink Tombigbee River water instead of well water.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports Saltillo (SAL’-tihl-oh) water customers who use 10,000 gallons (38,000 liters) monthly would see bills rise from $43.63 to $70.25 per month under a city proposal.

Rates are rising because the city would pay more to buy water from the Northeast Mississippi Regional Water Supply District. Residents complained about cheaper, but smelly and discolored, well water.

The city must also pay costs of new pipes to connect.

Northern District Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley will hold a hearing on proposed rates on Nov. 8.

The three-member Public Service Commission must approve rates because Saltillo has customers living more than a mile outside the city.
