NESS CITY, Kan. (AP) - A western Kansas sheriff has pleaded guilty to selling a .45 caliber pistol and ammunition to a convicted felon and has agreed to resign.
The U.S. attorney’s office says Ness County Sheriff Bryan Whipple entered the plea Monday. As part of the deal, the 48-year-old also agreed to surrender his law enforcement certification. The prosecution will recommend that he be sentenced to probation. Sentencing is set for Jan. 17.
Whipple initially faced three wire fraud charges alleging that he faxed reports falsely certifying that deputies had received training. But those charges were dismissed.
