PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island elementary school teacher has received a $25,000 award for her efforts in the classroom.

Fogarty Elementary School announced Wednesday that Michelle Johnson had been awarded the Milken Educator Award during a surprise ceremony. The program recognizes top educators across the country and is considered the Oscars of teaching.

Johnson was hired at the Providence school about five years ago to teach English as a second language. Administrators say Johnson used digital and conventional teaching methods to help her students meet reading level goals.

Milken Educator Awards Senior Vice President Jane Foley praised Johnson for “opening doors of knowledge that her students couldn’t have possibly imagined.”

Johnson said she was honored and thanked the students and staff.
