LEXINGTON, S.C. (AP) - Police say a man who fled from an officer trying to pull him over for speeding had barricaded himself in his South Carolina home when officers went to arrest him the next day.
Lexington police Chief Terrence Green tells news outlets 28-year-old Matthew Johns was taken into custody Wednesday night after he refused to emerge for several hours. Police deployed chemical gas into the house and Johns exited through a garage window.
Police say an officer attempted a traffic stop on Johns Tuesday morning but didn’t pursue him out of concern for public safety. They say he fled from another officer later that day, nearly hit a pedestrian and left the scene of a crash.
Johns was charged with reckless driving and other offenses. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer who could comment.
