DOVER, Del. (AP) - Being a police officer can be a little hairy at times, but it’s about to become even more hairy for some officers in central Delaware.

The Dover Police Department is partnering with Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 15 in allowing officers to grow facial hair as a fundraiser for “No-Shave November.”

Officers who want to participate must contribute $30, a dollar a day, to benefit the Delaware Prostate Cancer Coalition.

As of Tuesday, 42 officers have signed up.

Officials say beards are allowed, but they must be worn with a mustache. The neck must remain clean-shaven, and facial hair with any sort of faddish appearance, such as a “penciled beard” or facial hair shaved into a design other than a “natural” appearance is prohibited. Usually only mustaches are allowed.
