MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Both Democratic and Republican gubernatorial candidates in Vermont say they support a plan to clean up Lake Champlain and other waterways, but neither has said how to pay for it.
Democratic candidate Christine Hallquist tells Vermont Public Radio financing the cleanup will be a “collaborative decision.”
She says it’s a mistake to name a funding source now, and she declined to say which ideas she supports.
Republican Gov. Phil Scott says he’s committed to water quality funding, but he is “not interested” in creating a new tax.
He says he has a water quality funding proposal that he will release in January.
State Treasurer Beth Pearce said last year Vermont needs $25 million a year for the next 20 years to fund a comprehensive cleanup plan.
