NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine (AP) - Vandals have damaged parts of a hayfield in the nation’s only Shaker community in Maine.
Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village curator Michael Graham tells the Sun Journal someone drove onto the field in New Gloucester sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning.
Graham says the vehicle cut deep ruts into the soil, and he estimates it will cost several thousand dollars to repair.
The Shakers use the field to grow 50 tons of hay to feed livestock.
Graham says there has been a series of illegal dumping and vandalism at the property over the past year. He says the religious community is planning to put up gates to prevent more damage to the property.
