TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - A court hearing for a teacher accused of illegal sexual contact with a student has been postponed until Friday.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports Braden Bishop’s probable cause hearing was postponed because Bishop wasn’t present.

Mississippi law requires such a hearing before teachers and some other public employees can face criminal charges.

Tupelo police accuse Bishop of two counts of sexual battery and five counts of child molestation against a student younger than 18.

Bishop was fired Wednesday from his teaching job at Tupelo High School.

Defense attorney Anthony Farese requested the delay. Lee County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Gardner said in court Friday that Bishop was in mental health treatment in Meridian.

Lee County Prosecuting Attorney James Moore objects to postponement, saying Gardner doesn’t have to be present.
