JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A U.S. Naval station in Florida has received its newest battle ship in time for Thanksgiving.
The Florida Times-Union reports that the USS Sioux City and its 75 sailors arrived at Mayport Naval Station on Wednesday.
The ship was commissioned into the Navy over the weekend at the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The ship is 19th vessel now stationed in Mayport and the first ship to be named after Iowa’s fourth largest city.
The 378-foot-long (115-meter-long) Sioux City is the fifth vessel in what is expected to be 12 battle ships assigned to Littoral Combat Ship Squadron 2. The future USS Wichita is expected to arrive in Mayport in January
