MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The superintendent of Tennessee’s largest school district says he is resigning to join an insurance company after serving six years in the position.
The Tuesday announcement ends speculation that Shelby County Schools Superintendent Dorsey Hopson would join Republican Governor-elect Bill Lee’s administration as education commissioner or some other key education position. Hopson had endorsed Lee during the campaign, which the Republican often touted at political events.
Hopson is leaving the school district to Cigna for a “newly created national role” to help the company grow starting Jan. 8. The position will be based in Memphis. Hopson called his time at the school a “remarkable journey,” in which he helped navigate the district out of a multi-million dollar deficit and invested in teacher pay.
