SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah Senate President Wayne Niederhauser says fellow senators need to attend a planned Dec. 3 special legislative session to change a voter-approved medical marijuana ballot measure and that if necessary he’ll compel them to show up.
A Thursday email sent by Niederhauser says he “will not hesitate to order the sergeant-at-arms to find” absent senators and ensure their attendance for the planned one-day session.
Niederhauser says all senators need to attend the special session because the planned legislation needs support from two-thirds majority to take effect immediately.
The Mormon church helped craft a pre-election compromise between marijuana advocates, the church and lawmakers to gain the support of the church for medical marijuana.
Niederhauser’s email says law enforcement officials are concerned about a legal defense provision included in the ballot measure.
