NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Ford Motor Company Fund is giving a Nashville hospital $100,000 for its work teaching teens about distracted driving.
The Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt announced the award on Monday. Purnima Unni is the pediatric trauma injury prevention manager at Children’s Hospital. She says in a news release that the goal of the “Be in the Zone - Turn Off Your Phone ” program is to educate teens about the dangers of texting while driving.
The teens then take the information back to their schools and communities. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens.
A news release says the hospital’s campaign has reached more than 88 Tennessee high schools and approximately 114,000 students since 2011.
