CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - An environmental group has sued New Hampshire’s largest fish hatchery, alleging that discharge from the facility is polluting nearby lakes and rivers.

The Conservation Law Foundation announced Thursday that it had filed the federal lawsuit against the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department and its commissioner over discharges from the Powder Mill Fish Hatchery in New Durham that it alleges violate the Clean Water Act. Powder Mill is the state’s largest hatchery.

The group alleges that hatchery food and waste containing high levels of phosphorous, nitrogen and other pollutants has caused cyanobacteria outbreaks in the Merrymeeting River.

New Hampshire Fish and Game Executive Director Glenn Normandeau says the state is awaiting a new federal permit that would set limits on phosphorous and then will design a system to address it.
