COLCHESTER, Vt. (AP) - A popular bike path that takes riders across a stretch of Lake Champlain has been closed due to damage from a spring storm that brought heavy rain, wind and hail to Vermont.

Green Mountain Power, Vermont’s largest electric utility, recorded more than 50,000 customers without power at one point after the storm struck Friday night.

The utility reported wind gusts topping 55 mph that took down trees and power lines.

Colchester officials have closed the Colchester Causeway due to storm damage until further notice. Town officials say the storm resulted in sink holes and heavy debris on the causeway.

A Vermont Emergency Management spokesman says it will be mid-week before they can determine the storm’s damage by a dollar amount.
