BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Health Department says an individual is being treated for rabies exposure after a rabid fox climbed through a hole in a fence at a Brattleboro elementary school and came onto the playground.

One Academy School student was bitten and another scratched last Wednesday after they approached the fox, which was acting aggressively.

The Brattleboro Reformer reports paraeducator Curt Patterson kicked the fox several times until it left the property and brought the students inside the school.

The school custodian repaired the hole in the fence and children were allowed to go outside for recess with increased supervision. The fox was later found by a game warden and confirmed to be rabid.

The Health Department says three people were evaluated at the hospital, but only one needed treatment.
