OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - A University of Mississippi student is collecting food that might otherwise go in the trash when people leave at the end of the academic year.

The Oxford Eagle reports that Julie LaBerge has seen fellow students throw away canned goods and other food when they move out of apartments.

That gave her the idea to set out bins at three apartment complexes in Oxford. Working with other students and with local churches, LaBerge is collecting items that will be donated to a local food pantry.

According to the nonprofit group Feeding America, about 19 percent of the residents of Lafayette County, the home of Oxford, were “food insecure” in 2016. That means they didn’t always have access to enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle.
