GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a South Carolina woman who let out her three aggressive dogs to attack a deputy has been charged with second-degree assault and battery.

Greenville County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ryan Flood said the officer was bitten on the arm and leg Saturday evening. He was released from the hospital after receiving stitches.

Flood says the deputy shot one of the dogs at the home in Piedmont.

Flood said in a statement the deputy asked 40-year-old Shona Thompson to confine the dogs after seeing them as he arrived, but she let the three boxers out a short time later.

Deputies had been called to investigate a disturbance, but authorities say the complaint was unfounded.

If convicted, Thompson faces up to three years in prison. It wasn’t known if she had a lawyer.
