PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The state has purchased 101 acres in Glocester to preserve it as open space.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management says the land will be permanently protected for public recreational use including hiking, wildlife viewing, fishing and hunting.
The state bought it for about $375,000, mostly with funding from a federal grant.
It abuts the department’s Durfee Hill Management Area. That area, along with the George Washington Management Area, consists of 5,200 acres owned by the state.
Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo says investing in open space helps protect historic and locally significant lands, enhances communities, and fill gaps within state conservation areas, as was the case in Glocester.
DEM Director Janet Coit says she encourages people to get outdoors and go for a hike on the gorgeous property.
