BELMONT, Miss. (AP) - Officials are searching for a northeast Mississippi man, after someone opened fire on police during a traffic stop.

Tishomingo County Sheriff John Daugherty says deputies want to speak to Brian Turner of the town of Tishomingo.

Daugherty says a deputy and a Belmont police officer pulled over a black Dodge pickup near Belmont Thursday, only to have the driver ram the deputy’s patrol car with the truck. The sheriff says the driver then began firing an assault-style rifle at officers, hitting a Belmont police car. The deputy and the Belmont officer each returned fire, but the truck sped away.

Neither officer was injured.

Daugherty says the 2000 Dodge 1500 pickup should have damage to its rear passenger side. He urges anyone who sees Turner or the truck to call police.
