Depth charts aren’t decided in May. That being said, the Redskins elected to use veteran Orlando Scandrick as the “starting” cornerback opposite of Josh Norman last week in OTAs.
The spot is up for grabs after the Redskins moved on from cornerback Bashaud Breeland, who is still a free agent.
The position figures to be one of the team’s contested battles in training camp — with Scandrick, Quinton Dunbar and Fabian Moreau all expected to compete for the job.
But for now, Scandrick took most of the reps. The 31-year-old is new to the Redskins, signing a two-year, $7 million contract in March after spending 10 years with the Dallas Cowboys.
Scandrick can also play the slot, another position with no clear starter following Washington’s trade of cornerback Kendall Fuller for quarterback Alex Smith.
“We’re trying him out there,” Gruden said. “Without a doubt, he’s got experience there. He’s got experience at nickel. You see him at nickel. Having him here is a great benefit, not just for our defense but for Jamison [Crowder] and all our slot receivers working against a nickel with great experience.
“He brings great experience to the defensive back room, but he also helps the offense in the way he sees things and communicates with us, maybe things we can do better as far as attacking certain coverages.”
With Scandrick on the outside, Dunbar took reps at nickel with the first unit.
