EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - A man on trial for killing a married Washington couple says he committed the crime but denied that their deaths were cold-blooded executions, as prosecutors argue.

The Everett Herald reports John Reed told a jury Friday that he killed his Oso neighbors, Monique Patenaude and Patrick Shunn, in 2016 in self-defense during a dispute.

Reed testified that Patenaude took a swing at him, spat at him and fell to the ground. Reed claims Patenaude went to her Land Rover and grabbed a revolver. Reed said Shunn had a gun, too.

Reed said he got hold of Shunn’s weapon and opened fire following a struggle. He said he checked for pulses and both were dead.

Reed said he wanted to call 911 but panicked.

Reed faces life in prison if convicted.

Closing arguments are expected Tuesday.
