EAGLE, Colo. (AP) - Central Colorado officials have agreed to invest $500,000 to address a growing urgency for mental health resources in the Eagle area.

The Vail Daily reports the funds earmarked this week by the Eagle County Board of Commissioners will jump-start a new mental health program that received support from Eagle County voters in 2017.

Last year, voters approved new sales and excise taxes of up to 5 percent on recreational marijuana for a county mental health fund, which would pay for mental health and substance abuse services.

Last week, commissioners appointed 10 members to a newly formed advisory committee that will help the board manage the funds.

Eagle County Paramedic Services has pledged to provide an additional $100,000 in startup funds for the new mental health program.
