Democrat Amy McGrath on Tuesday won her party’s nomination in the 6th Congressional District in Kentucky — putting the former Marine fighter pilot and first-time candidate on a crash course with Republican Rep. Andy Barr in the midterm election.
Ms. McGrath cast herself as the outsider in her three-way race that also featured former Lexington Mayor Jim Gray.
Mr. Gray lost a challenge to Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky in 2016 and was depicted as the preferred pick of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
The race was called around 8 p.m.
Mr. Barr, meanwhile, cruised to the GOP nomination, but is considered vulnerable in the November election.
The Kentucky contest was among the marquee races playing out across the country on Tuesday.
Voters also hit the polls in Georgia, Arkansas and Texas.
