MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont State Board of Education has approved three candidates for Republican Gov. Phil Scott to consider for the next secretary of education.

Vermont Public Radio reports the board approved the candidates during their meeting in Rutland on Wednesday.

In a letter sent to the governor Thursday, State Board Chairwoman Krista Huling says the candidates have “expertise in education management and policy and demonstrated leadership and management abilities.”

The candidates’ identities have not been released.

The next candidate will replace Rebeca Holcombe, who abruptly resigned in March. Scott had previously said it was her personal decision to leave.
