LAS VEGAS (AP) - Nevada State College President Bart Patterson is apologizing after he was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving last week.

Patterson said in a statement Monday that he wants to be a role model and feels terrible for letting people down.

The 56-year-old was arrested Friday night in Henderson after his car crashed. He was driving home from a charity event.

Patterson says he thought he was in a position to safety drive but made the wrong choice. He says he’s fortunate that no one was injured and will ensure it never happens again.

He’s the longest-serving president of the college. It’s unclear what disciplinary action, if any, he could face from the Nevada System of Higher Education.

Chancellor Thom Reilly told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that he’s disappointed but also understands people make mistakes.
