OPINION:
Unfortunately the final statement of Rex Tillerson as secretary of state was an ill-concealed attack on President Donald Trump and his policies (“Tillerson urges State Department officials to forge ahead with ’integrity,’” Web, March 13). This was a case of two strong-minded men who had major differences in foreign policy, with both having little experience in the area. Mr. Tillerson’s short stay brings to mind a variation on a familiar statement: Appoint in haste and fire at will.
From the very start, Mr. Tillerson and Mr. Trump butted heads on major issues, including Iran, North Korea, Israel and Syria. Mr. Tillerson, in his hasty actions, apparently forgot he was subordinate and served only at the whim of the president.
From this fiasco we all should learn a lesson. For Mr. Trump, it is be careful whom you appoint. For Mr. Tillerson, it is don’t cross your boss with actions he opposes. And for the general public, it is don’t ask for educated moves from novices.
