A Colorado criminal defense investigator jailed for refusing to testify in a death penalty appeal because of her faith has been released.
A judge on Monday ordered that Greta Lindecrantz, a Mennonite who opposes capital punishment, be set free after Lindecrantz agreed to testify. She spent two weeks behind bars and was released Monday evening.
Lindecrantz did not want to testify for prosecutors seeking to uphold the conviction and death sentence of Robert Ray. But according to a court document filed Saturday, she changed her mind after Ray’s lawyers said her refusal to testify was hurting his appeal and putting his life at risk.
Lindecrantz worked on Ray’s original legal team. His current lawyers are challenging his conviction and sentence in part by claiming he didn’t have an effective defense.
