SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Sioux Falls’ new mayor and its police chief have announced a new drug unit focusing on street level narcotics rather the so-called kingpins.

Police Chief Matt Burns and Mayor Paul TenHaken said Wednesday two officers will be moved from general patrol duties to the narcotics unit. KELO-TV says they will work with the Sioux Falls Area Drug Task Force, which includes Minnehaha County sheriff’s deputies and state agents.

TenHaken, who took office last month, campaigned on curbing rising drug crimes in the city. Burns says drugs like meth and heroin lead to the most violent crimes in the city.
