JEROME, Idaho (AP) - Police say two people died and three others were injured after a six-vehicle chain-reaction crash Sunday night in southern Idaho.
Brian Trappen, 26, of Twin Falls was driving a Ford F-250 pickup eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 84 near Jerome, Idaho, the Idaho State Police said. A Dodge Caravan carrying three people swerved to avoid hitting Trappen, rolled in the median and landed in the eastbound lanes of travel, where it hit a semi-truck hauling a trailer.
Meanwhile, Trappen collided head-on with an Audi Q5 driven by 61-year-old Sharon Taki-Bishop of New Castle, Washington.
Another driver, Katie Munns of Nampa, hit the back of Taki-Bishop’s vehicle.
An eastbound Toyota Camry driven by 25-year-old Twin Falls resident Belinda Vela was also side-swiped by the Caravan, according to the police report.
Police say two of the people in the Dodge Caravan - 51-year-old Middleton resident Maricruz Lenhart and a juvenile - died at the scene. A third occupant, 48-year-old Francisco Delatorre, was thrown from the vehicle and taken by air ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Taki-Bishop and Trappen were also taken by air ambulance to area hospitals. Munns, Vela and semi-truck driver Juan Llamas Rodriguez of Nampa were not transported.
The crash remains under investigation.
