RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The state superintendent has announced 40 workers in the N.C. Department of Public Instruction will lose their jobs.
In addition to the layoffs reported by news outlets, Superintendent Mark Johnson said Friday 21 vacant positions were eliminated. Most of the cuts were in a division that helps low-performing schools and districts, and in the information technology division.
The layoffs are in response to $5.1 million in budget cuts lawmakers made to the agency. The North Carolina General Assembly reduced the agency’s administrative funds by 6.2 percent this school year and 13.9 percent next school year.
Johnson said Educator Support Services, which helps the low-performing schools, will move to a more regional support structure. He also said the agency will centralize IT’s core responsibilities and outsource other duties.
