PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Board of Elections has dropped contempt proceedings against one former aide to House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello but is still pursuing cases involving three other people.
The investigation concerns the Democrat’s 2016 re-election campaign and a controversial mailer that said a Republican opponent, Shawna Lawton, was endorsing Mattiello instead of her party’s nominee. Matthew Jerzyk, the former aide who is now no longer facing contempt, wrote in a letter saying the mailing never should have happened the way it did.
Jerzyk’s response was included among 125 pages of documents made public for the first time on Thursday as the board took its first steps in contempt proceedings.
Mattiello has acknowledged mistakes by his campaign but says they were inadvertent.
