Former All-Star players David Ortiz and Torii Hunter will be the managers for the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game on Sunday, July 15 at Nationals Park, it was announced Thursday.
Ortiz, from the Dominican Republic, will guide the World team and Hunter, an Arkansas native, will be the USA manager for the annual contest that attracts the top minor league prospects.
It will be the first time the Futures Game will be held in Washington. The 1969 Major League All-Star game was held at RFK Stadium, the last time the classic was held in the nation’s capital.
The rest of the Futures Game coaching staff and player rosters will be announced in the coming weeks.
The U.S. team leads the all-time series 12-7. Last year, the U.S. squad won 7-6 in Miami for its seventh win in eight years.
Ortiz played 20 years in the majors for the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox, and hit 541 homers in a career that ended in 2016. He was part of three World Series titles with the Red Sox.
Hunter played 19 years in the majors with the Twins, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Detroit Tigers and won nine straight Gold Glove awards in the outfield from 2001-09.
Ortiz and Hunter were teammates on the Twins from 1997-2002 and on the American League all-star team in 2007, 2010 and 2013.
