DENVER (AP) - Authorities say the Denver shooting that left a police officer wounded, a robber dead and two bystanders injured happened in a matter of seconds.
The Denver Post reports a worker at a convenience store near the state Capitol flagged down two passing Denver police officers after 29-year-old Carnell Nelson exited with the cash register drawer last week.
Denver Police Commander Barb Archer says the entire encounter happened in less than 10 seconds. He says the officers intended “to take him to the ground,” but Nelson started the gunfight.
Authorities say police yelled for Nelson to stop, but he turned and fired first.
Officer Travis Lloyd was shot on his thigh, but he returned fire at Nelson. Lloyd was treated at a hospital and released a few hours later.
