LIMESTONE, Maine (AP) - Lawmakers say U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin’s amendment to a defense bill that he claimed would save jobs in Maine doesn’t offer any protections.

The Sun Journal reports Poliquin announced in a press release last week that he had helped pass an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would protect over 600 jobs in Aroostook County. The bill sets aside $717 billion for the armed forces.

Critics including New York Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi, who is running for Congress as a Democrat in Utica, were quick to mention that the defense bill calls for 25 percent cuts in agencies supporting the military. They say the Republican’s amendment doesn’t include protections for the effected agencies.

Poliquin says his amendment ensures the defense act “has no impact on these Maine jobs.”
