University of North Carolina football coach Larry Fedora is receiving scrutiny for remarks he made about the state of the sport at ACC football media day on Wednesday.
Fedora does not believe a link between chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and concussions sustained during football has been proven, and drew a thread between the “decline” of football and the decline of the United States.
Larry Fedora: “Our game is under attack … I fear that the game will be pushed so far from what we know that we won’t recognize it 10 years from now. And if it does, our country will go down, too.”

Fedora reportedly was given multiple chances to clarify his remarks and doubled down, at one point saying, “I think it would be the decline of our country, yes.”
The response was swift Wednesday afternoon, with USA Today columnist Dan Wolken calling for Fedora to be fired.
