Roseanne Barr said her real-life support of President Trump will be reflected in her character for ABC’s “Roseanne” reboot, telling a panel Monday that the working-class Conner family will be “divided by politics” much like the current state of the country.

“In the ’Roseanne’ show, I’ve always tried to have it be a true reflection of the society we live in,” Ms. Barr told reporters, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I feel like half the people voted for Trump and half didn’t, so it’s just realistic.

“And, in fact, it was working-class people who elected Trump, so I felt like that was very real and something that needed to be discussed and especially about polarization in the family and people actually hating other people for the way they voted, which I feel is not American,” she added.

Ms. Barr, who has used her Twitter account to breathlessly defend Mr. Trump on topics ranging from unemployment to Israel, said she is taking a break from discussing politics on social media so that her opinions don’t “overshadow the show.” Still, she couldn’t help but defend the president during Monday’s panel.

“Well, that’s your opinion,” Ms. Barr fired back at one reporter who suggested Mr. Trump is xenophobic, THR reported. “Well, he says a lot of crazy s—t … I’m not a Trump apologist. There are a lot of things he’s said and done that I don’t agree with, just like there are a lot of things Hillary Clinton has said and done that you don’t agree with. Nobody is brainwashed into agreeing with 100 percent of what anybody says.”

“The one great thing that I read today is that this is the lowest unemployment level for many, many years,” she added. “So I think that’s great and I do support jobs for people and I think that’s a great way to fight racism is helping everybody get a job.”

“Roseanne” is set to premiere Tuesday, March 27, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
