PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - An officials portrait of former Providence Mayor Angel Taveras (tah-VEHR’-as) is set to be hung in City Hall.

WPRI-TV reports Taveras’ official mayoral portrait will be unveiled April 7 at a ceremony in City Hall. The portrait was painted by the artist Harley Bartlett. Attorney Mark Ryan and Taveras’ former aide Gonzalo Cuervo raised nearly $14,000 for the portrait’s completion.

Taveras served as mayor from 2011 to 2015. He was the first Latino be elected mayor of the city. The Democrat is heralded for navigating city budget issues and introducing education initiatives.

Taveras launched a bid for governor in 2014 but lost the Democratic nomination to Gov. Gina Raimondo. He now works as a private attorney.
