SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A mother and her two daughters have taken sanctuary in a converted classroom at a Utah church rather than move to Honduras on a federal deportation order.
Unidad Inmigrante activist Amy Dominguez told The Salt Lake Tribune on Tuesday that Vicky Chavez fears for her life if she returns to her home country.
Chavez moved to the U.S. in 2014, citing domestic abuse, violence and economic and social unrest.
Chavez decided at the last minute to go with her daughters, ages 6 years and 4-months-old, to the First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City, where the Rev. Tom Goldsmith told reporters his congregation supports the move.
Salt Lake City Sanctuary Solidarity Network official Kristin Knippenberg says volunteers plan to stay at the church to ensure safety for Chavez and her children.
