White House Legislative Director Marc Short said Friday that the administration is in constant contact with leaders on Capitol Hill to try to avoid a government shutdown.

“I think the president is in close communication with Mitch McConnell,” Mr. Short said on MSNBC.

“The president is very engaged. He’s doing his part to make sure this happens,” he added.

Mr. Short said he expects a lengthy day of back-and-forth discussions between lawmakers on both sides of the aisle as well as with members of the administration, but he did say a shutdown is “a growing possibility.”

He pushed back on the idea of passing a continuing resolution through the weekend, arguing that nothing would change in that time and a shutdown would be just as possible in that timeframe. He did say that a CR that goes through the next month would allow a deal on DACA — Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival recipients — as well as a budget.
