WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. (AP) - Defense attorneys say a man on trial in Vermont for killing a man in 2015 was acting in self-defense, but prosecutors call the deadly shooting an “execution.”

The Valley News reports that opening statements in the trial of 32-year-old Gregory Smith were held Monday. Smith is charged with second-degree murder in the April 2015 death of Wesley Wing in Springfield.

Prosecutors say Smith pulled his car alongside Wing after Wing got into an argument with Smith’s girlfriend.

Smith’s attorneys say Wing, who was on foot, approached Smith’s vehicle and attacked him through the window. They say Smith panicked and opened fire.

Prosecutors say Wing was several feet away from the vehicle when he was shot five times.

Smith fled the scene and was arrested several days later in Londonderry.
