Jordan Bohannon, Iowa hoops player, purposely avoids breaking school record to honor late Hawkeye

University of Iowa basketball player Jordan Bohannon missed a free throw on purpose Sunday to avoid breaking a program record held by the late Chris Street.

Bohannon had tied Street’s Iowa record of 34 consecutive free throws made, but did not want to supplant him. Street died in a car accident in 1993, while he was still a junior at Iowa.

“That’s not my record to have and obviously that record deserves to stay in his name,” Bohannon said after the game. “I’ve been really close with his family these past couple years and getting to know them a lot and just listening to his story, honestly.”

“That’s not my record to have. That record deserves to stay in his name.”

His decision to avoid breaking Street’s record was praised in many corners of the internet, including an emphatic message of gratitude from ESPN host Scott Van Pelt.

The touching moment took place on Iowa’s senior night, and the Hawkeyes broke a six-game losing streak and ended the regular season with a 77-70 win over Northwestern.
